Research Book 2 - Personal Development

Three areas of photography which I have an interest in and consider myself to hold potential skills to make a career out of are:

  • Portraiture
  • Events
  • Wedding
Looking at the characteristics of each of the above categories:

Portraiture:

Kay Oliver

http:www.kayoliverphotography.co.uk/DEFAULT.aspx//

I chose Kay Oliver as my portrait photographer to look at, her images are lovely with a soft touch to them. They capture an essence of innocence and beauty, with most of the images having a shallow depth of field focusing just on the child/children. She uses props on a lot of her images which is something that's become more popular in today's society and sometimes gives your image a more personal touch. She has a range of props and costumes which you can choose from or you can take your own. She has her own website which is easy to use and welcoming for any parent/parent to be she introduces herself and gives you a description of what she does and how long she has been successful in what she does. I think this adds a little warmth and friendly feel knowing some information and background about who will be potentially photographing your child. Something to think about when creating my own online website/portfolio and add warmth to the viewer. She also has a link to her blog page which gives you a preview at shoots and ongoing shoots she has been doing, this gives you a lot work to preview which in turn proves she is a reliable able bodied photographer. If you were looking for a photographer then this would give you more confidence in choosing her as to someone who's website/blog had little work to show. Her prices seem reasonable for what she offers and the results she gets I suppose you wouldn't mind paying for her services knowing the quality you would be receiving.
Is she successful?
I would say she is successful yes because she updates her blog monthly with various shoots so she has a flow of custom which she charges at premium prices. She is also members of SWPP & BPPA, UK BRIDE APPROVED SUPPLIERS AND BANP. For her to become a member and if she has to pay an annual fee then you would think she is making a profit to be paying out the costing for having such memberships. Her images are also very pleasing and that in its self is success to her.

Equipment needed for this type of photography would be DSLR camera with a prime lens or the standard 18-55mm zoom lens, flash kit & back drop, flash gun ideal for bouncing light on to the subject, reflectors used also for reflecting light back at your subject, props for the scene or baby/child, tripod to stabilise the image and help focus on the specific part of the scene or model. Having all this enables you to set the studio equipment up at home for the clients to come to you or it enables you to be mobile and go to clients houses. Having your own props to hand means you can offer your own gimmick of photography to the customer. Having a range of backdrops is also good to have as some clients don't want the average black white or grey some might like a splash of colour. Keeping an eye on the present trends happening within baby/ children photography keeps you fresh on what you can offer and how to adapt this so its unique to yourself for your own business.

Any photographer working full time for the British news media who wants to help to promote our profession is eligible to join. The membership policy of the Association was formulated to make sure that it is both inclusive and representative of the profession. We don’t have any part-time or student memberships, but we do our best to provide advice and support to those working to join the industry.

His career to date has seen his work recognised regionally and nationally in news and sport, with highlights being highly commended in sports journalists associations young sports photographer category and being named the Midlands media awards sports photographer of the year 2009-2013.

His work being regularly used for business marketing and press use, with it being featured in many national newspapers and magazines.

Photography celebrities and international sports stars and shooting business portraits for the last ten years, giving him a variety of experience for all types of assignments. He use's a portable lighting set-up which is ideal for corporate portraits.

I have chosen Dan Mattham's as my wedding photographer aswell as I really appreciate his work, his images are beautifully composed with sharp crisp focusing.

Equipment for events photography would be a DSLR camera with a zoom lens depending on the type of event id say a zoom of up to 75mm or a 300mm to help get that perfect moment. Tripod to stabilise the camera if you need a long shutter speed, flash gun to illuminate the shadows and bounce light,

Wedding:

Dan Matthams is very successful in his work and career, to achieve recognition regionally and also nationally for his work is remarkable and shows how dedicated and professional he really is. Being commissioned to photograph celebrities your work needs to be on spectrum of greatness and his photography is outstanding. His composition and framing sets the images off and catches the eye he has his own distinct style to create beautiful crisp images. His wedding packages go in 3 stages of standard gold and platinum. with the price range showing his success. I would say Dan Mattham's is an all round photographer that has achieved success and is reaping the benefits, hard work is key.

Equipment for wedding photography would be DSLR camera with a prime lens and a second camera with a wide angle lens prime lens gives the image a beautiful shallow depth of field with them going down to 1.8, 1.4 or 1.2 depending on which you choose to buy. The wide angle lens would be useful for the group shots and to get the scenery into the images. A flash again this would be used to bounce light onto the subjects to brighten up the scene.

1.4) With the 3 genres I have chosen I could pursue them all and offer them as my services for when I launch my own business. Portraiture is always needed parents always want there children photographed to document their years and at birth. Event photography I would put under as birthday parties, christenings and other celebrations where you would document the day. And last but not least wedding photography someone gets married every day if I can build on my skills for that particular genre I can also try and make that part of my business venture. I am confident in taking portraits and really enjoy doing them especially of children so this is my more stronger genre in which I am pursuing. I have my own lighting setups and backdrops so I can offer mobile work or set up at my own house and invite the client round which ever there more comfortable doing.

1.5) Photographers now days advertise their services majority on social media & online eg- twitter, Facebook, Instagram and websites. As the generations is more or less digital people spend a lot of time online so this is way in advertising is extremely successful. For example I could be on Facebook see a photographer advertising and remember a friend who needs one, I send her the link or tag her in their post, by doing this other people see the link once i have sent it to my friend. This generates more business as more people are seeing the link for this particular photographer. Leaving business cards or leaflets at the maternity ward in hospital is also another way in which to advertise your portraiture business, new mums or mums to be adore new born photography they grow and change so quick so parents like these moments captured. So this is also a lucrative way to drum up business. Having your own website is also a good way to promote your work, If potential clients hear your name the first thing they will try and do is look up your work so having a good body of work on the website can boost your chances to get the work.
